Tom's Harbor Bridge Repair Progress
The repairs to the Tom's Harbor Bridge are moving along nicely. The new road decking and rails have been completed on the outbound lanes of the bridge. The inbound lanes are about half way completed, with the decking and rails closest to US1 already finished. Work is continuing on the inbound lane decking closest to the island.
The traffic lights system has been working well so far but the outbound light cycles fairly quickly, those that delay going after the light turns green generally slow down traffic flow as the light turns red pretty fast. On busy holiday weekends the traffic backs up badly, on Memorial Day Weekend outbound was backed up to the entrance of Hawks Cay Resort. The Monroe County Sheriff Office has been stationing officers at US 1 to work the traffic flow manually during those times to keep traffic flowing.
We have posted a photo album of the Tom's Harbor Bridge Repairs in the photo gallery to the left if you would like to see the progress of the project. Please continue to use caution when traveling on and off the island; pedestrians, people on bikes and construction workers are also using this same area and don't always go by the rules of the road. It will not be long before this project gets completed and things will go back to normal. Florida Keys Normal that is.
