Trash & Recycling


 

Garbage

Collection days are Tuesday and Saturday. Please use trash cans with lids. Each container can have no more then a 32 gallon capacity; and, when filled, can weigh no more than 50 pounds.

Garbage cans should be out by the curb very early in the morning and should be picked up soon after pickup. If you will not be available to pickup your cans, you can use heavy black plastic bags to put out your garbage or make arrangements with a neighbor to retrieve the cans from the curb.

Recycling

Items to be recycled are collected on Saturday.

Please rinse and recycle items such as plastic bottles marked 1 or 2, steel and aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars (clear, green, and brown). No caps or lids, please.   

Newspapers should be placed in brown paper bags or a separate recycling container. Flattened corrugated cardboard is accepted, but a single bundle can not weigh more than 25 pounds.

Batteries should be placed in a clear plastic bag.

Recycling bins can be obtained from Marathon Garbage Service (743-5165). 

Landscape Waste

Landscape waste is picked up on Wednesday. 

Loose landscape waste must be separated from garbage and placed in trash cans. Plastic bags are not acceptable. Palm fronds and trimmings should not extend more then one foot above the top of the container. Waste can also be tied in bundles. Each bundle should be no longer than four feet and should weigh no more than 50 pounds.

Bulk Waste

To schedule pick up for items such as furniture, appliances, carpets and car tires, call Marathon Garbage Service at 743-5165. Please put out items to be picked up as close to the collection day as possible.

Hazardous Waste

There are three collection centers for drop off of hazardous waste:

  •  Cudjoe Key at MM 21.5 / 1st and 3rd Wednesdays / 8:00AM-4:00PM

  •  Long Key at MM 68 / 1st and 3rd Fridays/ 10:00AM-2:00PM

  • Key Largo at MM 100.3 / 2nd and 4th Wednesdays/ 10:00AM-2:00PM

For more information, call 305-295-4314. The Marathon City Marina will also accept waste oil.

There is a 25 gallon liquid limit and a 200 pound dry limit for office paper. Acceptable items include motor oil, car batteries, corrosives, oil, hydraulic fluids, fertilizers, contaminated gasoline, pool cleaning products, solvents, fiberglass resins, antifreeze, and wood preservatives.

Please note that explosives, asbestos, radioactive waste, and biohazardous materials are prohibited from being dropped off at these centers.
