2021 Member Letter

Dear Duck Key Resident,

2020 has been a challenging year for all of us. Between the pandemic which has so changed our lives, the continuing recovery from IRMA, and the local bridge challenges that we have dealt with on Duck Key, we have had a lot to contend with. In spite of all of the difficulties, DKPOA members have been generous with financial donations and volunteer work in 2020, and we sincerely thank them. There are an unprecedented number of new homes being built on Duck Key as well as the turnover of existing homes and new neighbors joining our community. We look forward to welcoming each new family.

With your 2020 DKPOA member donations, we have maintained the common area gardens, added rock borders to our many Triple Montgomery palms, and new property owners received a DKPOA welcome gift. Another important accomplishment of DKPOA was the replacement of one-third of the idle speed buoys and cables in Tom's Harbour. Our resident volunteer Bridge committee, led by John Wolfe, has met consistently with the County planners to ensure that our voices are heard and our new bridges will incorporate all of the resident’s feedback. They have successfully negotiated bridge safety aspects as well as the landscaping concerns of properties adjacent to the bridge, the underground placement of utilities in association with the bridge, and the vibration concerns as construction starts. DKPOA also stepped in to help when the county suddenly determined that our bridges could not support the weight of vehicles passing over them. During the transition from heavy garbage trucks to lighter weight ones that can meet county bridge weight restrictions, DKPOA picked up landscaping waste for residents. We have continued to liaison with the county on code compliance issues and have successfully partnered with the county in the demotion of several abandoned homes.

Our website continues to develop and this year we have added the ability to accept donations from all credit and debit cards. Complete your 2021 application and donate today. The DKPOA website consolidates important Duck Key information, history and events which will enhance our communication to each member. Send us an email at dkresident@gmail.com telling us what you think or share additional pictures of community events. These are welcome and will be added to our site.

For 2021, we will continue our beautification program by adding enhancement of our common area as funds permit. We will continue to engage with the County on the reconstruction of our Bridges, maintain vigilance on code compliance and on other activities designed to allow our residents to enjoy their Duck Key properties. We are also beginning to work on a project to finance and repair the storm damage made to the south and east breakwater. DKPOA membership discounts remain active for 2021 and hopefully new discounts will be added.

With your donation today we can continue to improve Duck Key for the benefit of all our residents. Remember, your contributions are 100% federally tax-deductible.

Please attend our DKPOA Annual Membership General Meeting on January 23, 2021 via a Zoom Video call from 1 pm to 3 pm. Due to the current Covid-19 concerns, the DKPOA board will not hold an in-person meeting this year.

We are hoping that 2021 is a wonderful and healthy year for all of our residents.

Sincerely,

The DKPOA Board
Ron Oestreicher, President; John Schwarz, VP; Christine Waddill, Secretary; Jan Anderson, Treasurer; Barbara McKinney, Michael Solomon, Ellen Tanis, Karen White, John Wolfe, Directors.
